In a state full of visitors, it can be hard to find someone who will still be here next month. The answer is to show up where people put down roots. These are good places to start.
Join a public sea turtle watch
Sea turtles nest on Florida's Atlantic coast from March to October and on the Gulf coast from May to October. The state wildlife agency permits certain groups to run public turtle watches. At home, keep beach-facing lights off at night.

Volunteer with manatees
Blue Spring has a Manatee Observer Volunteer program, run with partner agencies, to stop manatees being harassed and to teach visitors about them. It draws people who care about the same things.

Become a sunset regular
Mallory Square's own guide calls the plaza a neighborhood living room, where neighbors gather as the day ends. Some start with a drink and live salsa music nearby, then walk to the Historic Seaport for dinner.
